Project Steel Ship - Steel Art
Discovery of Brazil 500 years ago

Project idea - a travel to the roots

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Brazil's discovery steel sculptures made from different steel qualities stemming from Brazilian ore are intended to travel back to the locality of their material origin, into the region of Minas Gerais and its capital Belo Horizonte. They travel in the opposite direction of the ore, they travel with an ore vessel from Rotterdam to Vitória. The exhibits are distinguished by their reference to formal conceptions and means of expression of visited countries' cultures. In the centre of attention two steel sculptures are to be found: Oxalá, god of fertility and soil, and Jemanjá, goddess of the seas and the water, refering to Brazilian mythology. Around them 38 steel sculptures showing African and Central American influences. The (woman) artist, Lu Possehl, intends to define an ageless cultural sphere by means of rediscovering old features presented in a new way.

Correlations of the project

The Duisburg-located steel-producer Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG imports for its production sites a huge amount of ore from Brazil. The crude iron produced is processed in steel and rolling mills. The large product program of flat quality steel is sought after by a wide variety of steel processors: from the Automotive industry to aviation, space technology and the processors of Zinc coated sheet.

And last but not least, also steel sculptors ore among to the customers.

It was on the 21st of April, 1500, when Portuguese seafarers under Admiral Pedro Álvarez Cabral sighted the Brazilian mainland for the first time. Already in 1494 the colonial world was divided between Portugal and Spain by arbitration of Pope Alexander VI. in the treaty of Tordesillas: Portugal was to receive the territories east of the 48th degree of longitude, corresponding to a line Bélem - Brasilia - Curitiba. The area of South America in which the Portuguese language is spoken today amounts to 8.5 million square kilometres with 160 million inhabitants. Major economic interrelations with Germany are iron ore exports via the ports of Tubarao/Vitória and São Luis.

A voyage with different stopovers is predestined for a presentation in the Internet. This outline of the accompanying documentation was provided for from scratch as far as conception and plans are concerned, including the necessary technical know how. With the shipping of the steel sculptures the Internet presentation starts up under www.cinema-bleu.com. All sites of the project will be presented in the Internet and especially the ocean bound passage across the Atlantic Ocean is meant to present the exhibits in a changing environment on board of the ore cargo liner in a new context.

The project so far is supported by Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG, Siemens AG, Reederei Bergesen dy ASA and
ARENS LANGEN, Aquashipping Maritima Ltda., Brazilian.
